Q&A with Yongjin Hwang:

Q: How did you develop the Snow Melt technology?

A: There are many excellent ingredients available on the market, but products like probiotics and supplements require a habit of consistent consumption to be effective. 

During my time at a global pharmaceutical company, I observed patients with hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia taking numerous medications. I could understand the feeling of being ‘full’ from medication alone. Advances in technology have allowed patients to better manage their conditions simply by adhering to their medication regimen. However, many stop taking their meds once their numbers improve, often because they find it challenging to continue.

I personally tasted around 300 to 400 probiotic products during the development process. Consuming so many can sometimes lead to adverse reactions, but I needed to compare flavors, and at times I found myself taking 17 to 18 doses in one day. There were products that required water and others that tasted so unpleasant they were difficult to swallow.

“Based on my experiences, I thought it would be ideal to develop a material that makes it easy and enjoyable to consume supplements regularly. I considered how applying a quick-dissolving method to medications could enhance convenience, which ultimately led to the creation of the Snow Melt technology.

Q: What are NOVALACTO's plans and goals for the future?

A: Many people think that probiotics only serve the purpose of improving gut health by eliminating harmful bacteria. However, research shows that the gut microbiome has a significant impact on health factors like dementia, blood pressure, and diabetes. Moving forward, NOVALACTO will focus on developing technologies based on the microbiome. We are currently conducting clinical trials for antihypertensive functional materials using postbiotics.
