WandoMom, a Korean seaweed processing company, will participate in the SIAL (Salon International de l'Alimentation) food fair held in Paris this October, showcasing its frozen abalones as part of its strategy to enter the European market. SIAL is one of the top three global food fairs, along with ANUGA in Cologne, Germany, and FOODEX JAPAN in Tokyo, Japan. The event will take place from October 19 to 23.
The South Jeolla Province government has selected four outstanding regional companies, including WandoMom, to support their entry into the European market. All selected companies will showcase products that have received overseas certification.
In addition, WandoMom recently held its first abalone export shipment ceremony to the Netherlands. The abalones being exported were harvested during their peak season in Wando’s clean waters, washed, and then quickly frozen at -45°C. The shipment amounts to approximately 15 tons (worth about 0,000). These abalones will be distributed throughout Europe, including at the South Jeolla Province Overseas Permanent Sales Office in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Korea holds a 6.5% share of the global abalone market, with major export destinations being Japan (78%), Vietnam (9.4%), the U.S. (5.1%), Taiwan (3.4%), and Singapore (1.7%). In 2023, South Korea's abalone exports reached approximately .78 million, proving the competitiveness of Korean products in the global market.
WandoMom plans to strengthen its position in the European market and establish itself as a global seaweed and abalone brand through its participation in the French food fair and its exports to the Netherlands.
In addition to its international expansion, WandoMom, a Korean seaweed processing company, has achieved significant growth in the domestic market. Recently, the company, which received sales coaching from Coupang for its seaweed products, saw its revenue increase tenfold.
By entering Coupang’s "Marketplace," WandoMom was able to quickly implement a new sales strategy. Particularly, its key product, "Frozen Gompi" (a type of seaweed), gained popularity and drove a shift from bulk sales to smaller packaging, responding to customer preferences.
Building on this success, WandoMom is confident in its future expansion into global markets and is targeting even greater growth, especially in Europe and other international markets. Executive Director Kim Jin-hyuk commented, "WandoMom’s frozen Gompi and abalones prioritize quality, and we will continue to focus on developing new products."
With the support of Coupang, WandoMom has secured the stability of its revenue structure, which will serve as a strong foundation for positioning the company as a competitive global brand.
